#FMSpotlight: Playboi Carti

Coming from a place where the only cool thing to do is to create music, finding a way to stand out amongst the crowd can actually be way more difficult than most people tend to conceive. Individuality is the only thing that a kid from Atlanta can pride himself on. No carbon copies, although through the narrow view of most may think that everyone from Atlanta seems to sound the same.  Maybe we have all just been listening wrong…

Playboi Carti far from just another gimmick, promotes self -expression as a choice and crosses lines from the norm allowing fans to see that what’s even more important than just being able to create music is that you create it however you want to create it and not how other people think you should be doing it. In a society where everyone is lost imitating trends they see on Instagram and twitter Carti is not your average social butterfly. In a recent interview with Ssense he stated that he does not go onto social media often “I really have nothing to talk about other than what’s important. I’ve never been the type to just be tweeting whatever.”  Here is an artist whose purpose is to reach his fans through his music, no gimmicks or smoke and mirrors. Playboi Carti is giving you Hip Hop through his lens and it’s rather bright.

Just in time for Summer his first release off of his self -titled ‘Playboi Carti’ Mixtape “ Magnolia” definitely shows “Magnolia” is feeling like just the first of many hits, I swear I had flashbacks of Cash Money Millionaires, straight nostalgia; what a feeling! The follow up single “Wokeuplikethis” is climbing up the charts as well, jumping from the #100 to the #80 spot on the Top 100 list. Features from his ASAP MOB family ASAP Rocky as well as Lil Uzi Vert; both known for setting trends and breaking barriers in Hip Hop. “New Choppa” feat. ASAP Rocky is such a tease, definitely one of the hardest tracks on the Mixtape I’m hoping there is a follow up record to this track in the future. We can look forward to more artists like Playboi Carti that don’t require the approval of the masses to create good music. If you don’t get it, that’s fine too everything is not for everyone just make sure it’s not because you are resisting change….you can’t stop change, it is the evolution of life and Hip Hop so enjoy the ride.
