The Legend of Big Draco

Soulja Boy is trending in 2019 and it’s no scandal. He is being appreciated and receiving his flowers while he is still alive.  Big Draco didn’t have the biggest comeback in 2018; he just reminded us how he was essential in the changes of the music industry. Nothing is new under the sun, MC Hammer used his image to attract endorsements. He was clowned for it, but today every rapper is attached to corporations. The same thing could be said for Soulja Boy.

2007 changed Hip Hop and Music

I was recently watching a CNN special about the 2000s in music. They mentioned the emergence of  YouTube being used as a method to find artists. They fumbled the ball on not mentioning Soulja Boy. As a teenager, he used Myspace and YouTube to push his music without a label’s support. With this, he secured a deal and “Crank That” sold millions digitally. Also in 2007, Kanye West outsold 50 Cent on the same day. The music scene would shift as more artists embraced the emergence of social media and Hip Hop would be less “gangsta”. Artists such as Wale, Kendrick Lamar, and J.Cole would be pushed to the forefront.

Soulja Boy Had Receipts

So the old heads didn’t see youth coming with Soulja Boy. He didn’t make the same mistakes. He had songs with the Migos and Chief Keef before their rise to success. Tyga was in his videos 10 years ago. Drake might have used his flow twice. Soulja Boy had Rich The Kid and Famous Dex in Los Angeles with him before they got hot. Big Draco might yell a lot, but he got the paperwork to back it up.
