#FMTrends: Lil Baby for Best New Artist

Lil Baby receiving the Best New Artist award at the 2019 BET Awards was secondhand exhilaration for Thug fans. Lil Baby and Gunna who are heavily influenced by Young Thug have seen their careers skyrocket in the last calendar year. It’s a huge confidence boost for the first time award winner who was humble in his acceptance speech. “This is my first time winnin’ an award… But I just wanna thank my fans and everybody who been rockin’ with me, supporting everything I do. I wanna thank the Most High, my family, and everybody else.”

The other artists in contention for the award were: new XXL freshman Blueface, Juice Wrld, City Girls, and Queen Naija. Lil Baby’s victory marked a historic year for the young artist, in which he featured two projects that broke into the top 5 of the Billboard 200. The two projects that paved the way for him, Street Gossip and Harder Than Ever, solidified him as one of the key artists on the rise at Quality Control.

Despite this, the level of competition for the award was fairly high. Blueface, who blew up on social media initially with listeners drawn to his awkward cadence secured his spot through hits like “Thotiana” and “Respect My Cryppin’”. He also recently claimed accolades of his own as he can now be seen on the cover of the XXL Freshman magazine.

Juice Wrld was also a close second for the award after his second album, Death Race For Love, debuted as the No. 1 album in the country. Juice has been able to flourish with various collaborations including an entire album with Future and features with the likes of Lil Wayne, Young Thug, and Gunna.
