The Republic of Brooklyn Holds Celebration for “Do The Right Thing”

Do The Right Thing is 30 years old! The film hasn’t aged a bit and is has relevant today as it was in 1989. Spike Lee threw a block party in Bed-Stuy on Stuyvesant Avenue, where most of the film was shot. The avenue(between Lexington Av. and Quincy St.) has been renamed “Do The Right Thing Way” in 2015. Along with the block party, the film will be screened in theaters in 4k restoration.

Do The Right Thing Will Always Stand the Test of Time

DTRT dropped on the same day as Tim Burton’s Batman. Spike Lee’s film was also the film of choice for Barack and Michelle Obama’s first date. It also was released in a very turbulent time in New York City. 10 weeks prior, The Central Park 5 were arrested and charged for raping and beating a jogger. Lee used racial incidents in NYC such as death of Michael Griffith in Howard Beach and Michael Stewart in Manhattan for motivation. Just like the film, Straight Outta Compton, people feared black people would riot after viewing  Do The Right Thing. The death of Radio Raheem by the hands of the police mirrors the death of Eric Garner in 2014. It showed how the more society changes, the more it stays the same.

Is Do The Right Thing Spike Lee’s Crown Jewel?

Spike Lee has an impressive film catalog. He won his first Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for BlacKkKlansman. Jungle Fever and Malcolm X are classics. Denzel Washington was robbed for Best Actor for the latter. Mo’Better Blues, He Got Game, and Summer of Sam are very underrated and could match some directors best work. DTRT didn’t win an Oscar in 1989. In 1999, it was deemed “culturally, historically, and aesthetically significant by the Library of Congress. The film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.
