Jaden Smith Provides Water for Flint

Jaden Smith’s Just Water company is working to provide cleaner water for Flint, Michigan. The city originally switched their water supply in 2014 and residents immediately started to notice problems. The brown and fowl-smelling water coming from taps left children ill due to lead poisoning. The city and state officials continue to deny the worries of the city’s mostly black and low-income residents. Governor Rick Snyder announced the end to Flint’s free bottled water program on April 6, 2018, declaring the water clean.

The Water Box Filtration System

The city’s efforts to replace lead-contaminated lines is still ongoing. With no bottles of clean water coming in from the government, Smith’s foundation and other non-profits have stepped in. Smith’s company is teaming up with the First Trinity Missionary Baptist Church and other organizations, including The Last Kilometer, Rethink H2O, Black Millennials for Flint, and 501CTHREE, to bring a mobile filtration system called “The Water Box” to remove lead and other toxins from the contaminated water in Flint.

Jada Pinkett Smith announced that she will be donating money to finding a long-term solution. Jaron Rothkop, President of the Last Kilometer said, “Instead of the first thing they think of is how do we get truckloads of water donated that we can hand out. That may be a temporary measure, but they think: how do we get a Water Box and solve the problem ourselves and test the water ourselves.”  The Water Box is a more sustainable solution allowing the Flint community to get the purified water they need.
