FM HIP HOP: How did you begin your entertainment career?

KELLY PHOENIX: I first started my career in my early 20s working as a model and booker for a well-known agency. I modeled for about eight years straight– ranging from runway, magazine, commercial print, music videos, etc. [Then,] I took a break and begin a family. About seven years later, I decided I wanted to get back into the business, [but] more behind the scenes, so I started a modeling agency. The agency lasted a year and was successful, however many people kept asking me why I wasn’t in front of the camera. So with motivation from others,I decided to put the modeling agency aside and start working on my own career. I soon discovered my natural talent on the red carpet interviewing guest.

FM: What makes an incredible red carpet experience?

KP: I believe what makes a great red carpet experience is being yourself, being confident with what you do, and the rest will speak for itself. A lot of people get nervous with the flashing lights and cameras in their face– I try to make whoever I am interviewing comfortable prior to the interview and give them pointers to get the best out of them.

FM: What advice do you have for aspiring entertainment personalities?

KP: The advice I would give aspiring entertainment personalities is first to be true to yourself and who you want to be. Do your research on other personalities that have made it in the business to understand your craft. Lastly, don’t give up! Practice makes perfect and keep pushing to excel and own your craft.

FM: How do you balance work and family?

KP: Staying focused on what is needed and prioritizing what’s important at that time is how I balance the two. Sometimes I need to sacrifice time with my family to do certain things, however, I make up for that time because family is important and this is why I do what I do.

FM: What are some of your favorite past events?

KP: One of my favorite events was just this past July 13– it was for FEMCON (Female Empowerment Music Conference). All-female panels of legends like Lady Luck and DJ Cocoa Chanelle. It was a great event with powerful women giving advice to upcoming female artists. [It also included] an all-female concert of aspiring artists after the conference. Another fab [event] was the Bronx Food And Wine Festival at the Bronx Zoo. I love events that give back to the community and charities.

FM: What are your long-term goals?

KP: My long-term goal is to be able to make a difference in other people’s lives. What’s the point of going through all I have been through not to be able to share, educate, and motivate others who may feel lost and want to give up, or just lost and need to find their way. Whatever is placed in front of me that can help elevate others, show them they can also rise above anything like the Phoenix, that is a goal I am planning and would love to accomplish.
