Chris Brown is facing another lawsuit, and this time Drake is involved. The two artists are in legal trouble over their collaborative single “No Guidance,” after producer Mr. Cooper filed a copyright infringement lawsuit.

The duo released the track in June 2019 as part of Brown’s ninth studio album, Indigo. According to TMZ, Mr. Cooper, also known as Brandon Cooper, and artist Drum’n Skillz, also known as Timothy Valentine, filed the suit. The pair claim Brown and Drake copied Mr. Cooper’s track “I Love Your Dress,” alleging they took the flow, parts of the structure, and beat from the song to create “No Guidance.”

Breezy and Drizzy: A Complicated Past

The collaboration between Brown and Drake came as a pleasant surprise for fans, especially after their tumultuous friendship. The pair have allegedly fallen out a couple of times over different issues.  They also reportedly had a Rihanna-related falling out, who the two dated at different points in time and who Brown infamously assaulted in 2009. Breezy and Drizzy’s beef escalated in 2012, when members of their respective entourages began brawling in a nightclub in New York.

Brown even sneak-dissed Drake in a verse on Young Jeezy’s “R.I.P” remix. Fortunately, they publicly reconciled their differences after Drake invited Brown on his Los Angeles tour in 2018. The reconciliation was followed by rumors of a possible collaboration, with Brown sharing snippets of the song. The creative team behind “No Guidance” sampled the track “Before I Die” by Che Ecru.

Listening to both “No Guidance” and “I Love Your Dress,” one might notice a few similarities, but they’re not exactly obvious. Mr. Cooper also claims that Brown referenced him in the line “flew the coop,” alleging it was a sly play on his name. It’s unclear how much the lawsuit could cost in terms of settlement, but Cooper and his colleague certainly intend to cash in on their claims.
