Kanye West currently has a lot on his plate. With Donda 2just around the corner, an impending divorce, and drama surrounding his daughter North, the famous Gemini has been in the headlines nonstop. Now, he’s in the spotlight for burning bridges on Instagram with Kid Cudi.
Kanye passes us a note
The drama started with a strange note Kanye posted on his Instagram earlier in the week (Feb. 12). The handwritten note confirmed Kid Cudi won’t make an appearance on Donda 2 due to his relationship with “you know who”. Take a look below:
“Just so everyone knows,” Kanye began. “Cudi will not be on Donda because he’s friends with you know who. We all speak in Billie language now.” He captioned the photo with a single shrugging emoji.
The message is cryptic but can be deciphered with some context.
The “Billie language” references a situation from the previous week (Feb. 10). West demanded an apology from Billie Eilish after her comments on concert safety allegedly offended Travis Scott. She stopped a Feb. 7 concert to retrieve a lost inhaler for a fan, and followed up with the statement: “I wait for the people to be okay before I keep going.” While Travis wasn’t mentioned by Eilish at all, Kanye apparently perceived the positive sentiment as an attack. Travis is currently in the middle of a nasty legal battle regarding his chaotic November Astro World concert, in which 10 people lost their lives.
the “you know who” is believed to be Pete Davidson. Davidson began dating Kim Kardashian in October last year, and Kanye hasn’t been shy about his disdain.
A rocky road with Kanye & Cudi
Nonetheless, Most fans bypassed the Billie and Pete portion of the note and focused solely on Kid Cudi. Cudi and Kanye have collaborated heavily in the past and developed a real friendship in the process. The ‘Day n Nite’ rapper signed to Kanye’s G.O.O.D Music label in 2008 and co-wrote several songs on 808’s & Heartbreak that same year. Kanye then made an appearance on Cudi’s 2009 album Man on the Moon: The End of Day. The two had many guest verses on each other’s projects in the years following, such as ‘Erase Me’ in 2010 and ‘Father Stretch My Hands Pt 1’ in 2016. Although Cudi left G.O.O.D music in 2013, he maintained a positive relationship with West. “Everything is peace with everybody on the label. There’s never been any issues, but I am announcing that I’m no longer on G.O.O.D. Music. And this is something that no one knows, really. I’m no longer on G.O.O.D. Music.” He told Power 106 Los Angeles.
Somewhere between then and 2016, things between the two rappers turned sour. In September 2016, Cudi typed a string of angry tweets addressing his qualms with the music industry. Included in those now-deleted tweets were direct shots at Kanye. “I need yall to know I got so many haters within the industry and these clowns know I’m bout to crush their entire existence.” He began.
“Everyone thinks they’re soooo great. Talkin top 5 and be having 30 people write songs for them” – @KidCudi
“The fake ones wont be lasting too much longer” -@KidCudi
“And all u jealous chicken hearted shits I see you too” -@KidCudi
“My tweets apply to who they apply. Ye, Drake, whoever. These niggas dont give a fuck about me. And they aint fuckin with me.” -@KidCudi
“Ive been loyal to those who haven’t been to me and that ends now. Now im your threat.” -@KidCudi
“Anybody got a issue with my words im glad. If you feel me, dont be scared to use your voice. I was for so long out of blind loyalty.” -@KidCudi
Kanye then responded to the rant during a stop of his Saint Pablo tour. According to a report by E!, the 44-year-old addressed his old label signee by name. “ Do you know how many people wish they could be signed to G.O.O.D. Music? Get their life changed, have an opportunity? Never forget that! I am so hurt. I feel so disrespected. Kid Cudi, we are two black men in a racist world. Don’t ever mention my name in a bad manner, none of y’all.”
Only days later, Kanye had a change of heart and mentioned Cudi again on stage. “I just want to take this time out to say Kid Cudi is my brother… The most influential artist of the past 10 years.”
The two managed to keep a healthy friendship since that shout-out. That is until that note Kanye posted on Instagram.
Cudi defends himself
Cudi fired to the note back with an equally flippant response. “Too bad wanna be on ur album” he typed. “u f—— dinosaur hahaha [laughing emoji] everyone knows I’ve been the best thing about ur albums since I met u. Ima pray [for] u for brother”
He further dissed Kanye on Twitter, confirming that they spoke on the issue one on one before the note was posted. “You’re whack for flipping the script and posting this lie just for a look on the internet.” He typed. “You ain’t no friend. BYE.”
We talked weeks ago about this. You’re whack for flipping the script and posting this lie just for a look on the internet. You ain’t no friend. BYE
The argument seemingly came to a close with another Instagram post by Kanye. He posted a photo of him, Timothee Chalamet, Cudi, and a crossed-out Pete. The caption reads: “I JUST WANTED MY FRIEND TO HAVE MY BACK THE KNIFE JUST GOES IN DEEPER”
Why did Kanye cross his face out like a middle schooler that just found out his homie ate a different table pic.twitter.com/aqNiTtJDK1
Cudi never responded, but Kanye hasn’t stopped his rant. Earlier today (Feb. 13) he spoke on the topic yet again.
“THE REASON I ASKED CUDI TO AT THE LEAST SPEAK TO SKETE IS BECAUSE FOR YEARS CUDI ALWAYS MADE IT SEEM LIKE IT WAS ME AND HIM AGAINST EVERYONE” he typed on IG.
“NOW THAT IM FIGHTING FOR MY FAMILY HE NOT BY MY SIDE THIS IS BIGGER THAN MUSIC”
Seeing how unpredictable their relationship has been in the past, it’s hard to say if Kanye and Kid Cudi can make amends. For right now, it’s looking unlikely.
