NEW YORK, N.Y. – In the case involving his fragrance with Parlux, Jay-Z flipped the script. TMZ reports that Hov has been awarded $4.5 million in royalties by an appellate court in New York City. The royalties stem from past cologne sales accumulated last fall, which Jay’s attorney legally requested.

Parlux Fragrance Suing Jay-Z For Marketing The Product Incorrectly

The Brooklyn mogul and Parlux signed a deal in 2012, and the fragrance Gold by Jay Z was released a year later. Following the cologne’s failure, Parlux sued Hov in 2016, blaming him for not marketing the product correctly. According to them, Hov failed to appear at the Macy’s Jay-Z Gold launch in 2014 and opted out of Good Morning America promotional spots.

Judge Assures Hov Did Not Violate His Contract

An NYC judge ruled that JAY-Z did not breach his contract with Parlux and helped him to avoid the $67 million lawsuits filed against him in November.

“You failed to prove your case, they failed to prove their case,” Justice Andrew Borrok reportedly stated to Parlux’s lawful team following the ruling. “You’re excused.”

At the time, Jay-Z told reporters, “I’d like to express my gratitude to the jury, especially during these difficult times.”

Did Jay-Z Want His Cologne To Become A Success?

Despite not addressing his $6 million counter-claim for royalties, the jury awarded Jay $4.5 million on Thursday.

“The record is clear: Parlux sold licensed products after July 31, 2015, but failed to pay royalties on those sales,” Justice John Higgitt wrote in his final decision today.

Attorney Alex Spiro reveals that the “Otis” rapper intended to succeed with his cologne during closing arguments. He had a year to make promotional appearances and had no obligation to appear at the launch.

“Why on Earth would Jay-Z put his name on one product and only one product in his entire career if he wanted that product to fail? Why?” Spiro posed. “And that’s a question they will never be able to answer because there is no answer.”
