Doja Cat has had a crazy year with nonstop promotion for her platinum album Planet Her and getting the gears in motion for her first U.S. tour. Despite the West Coast artist making claims of burnout, it looks like she already has plans for some new music.
Doja reaches out
In an IG live session on Christmas Day, Doja detailed her wishes for her next couple projects. One of them would be seven tracks long and focusing on her pop side and the other would be 12 exclusively hip-hop songs. Doja was sure to emphasize her wish for Jay Versace and 9th Wonder to produce the hip-hop tracks.
“New project. 12 songs. All of them, every fuckin’ one, Jay Versace and 9th Wonder,” she said on the live.
Jay and 9th reply
Both producers were quick to respond to the IG live. “Say what now?” 9th typed, quoting Doja on Twitter.
Versace responded “brah” to a clip of Doja showing both producers some love. The “Kiss Me More” artist described Jay as a “fantastic producer” and expressed enthusiasm for what the trio could possibly cook up in the studio.
9th Wonder is an r&b and rap producer known for prolific works like Kendrick Lamars 4th album DAMN, and the late Mac Miller’s Faces. Erykah Badu, Anderson Paak, and T.I. are other big names on his résumé.
Jay Versace, on the other hand, is a newer talent in the producing world. Starting out posting viral videos daily on Vine, he transitioned into music collaborating with Griselda and Denzel Curry.
An exhausted Doja Cat
This recent IG live session is a sharp turn for Doja, who was seemingly at the end of her ropes creatively back in November. She claimed it had been years since she was able to make music purely for enjoyment.
“And I mean make music like willy nilly, like just have fun and just jam and make some shit. I haven’t done that in maybe five years, feels like,” she stated.
“Capturing a concept, capturing a visual idea, like something like that, I love fashion, I do. I really do. I love to dress up, I love all that shit. Do I wanna do that shit because I have to? No! No, I don’t.”
With eleven Grammy nominations, five American Music Awards, and several hits under her belt, it’s hard to imagine a break coming for Doja any time soon.
