#FMTrends: The #MuteRKelly Movement

Surviving R.Kelly Sparks Debates and Conversation

The 6 part documentary on Lifetime,” Surviving R.Kelly,” has created worldwide discussions about the artist and the industry. People have longed separated the music from the person, but how could you? With lyrics such as “My mind is telling me no/but my body is telling me yes.” He also wrote and produced Aaliyah’s album Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number. R. Kelly was hiding in plain sight and society accepted it because he made great music.

Fear of Hypocrisy Can Make Us Ignorant

If you enjoyed his music in the past and want to cancel R Kelly because of the documentary  I understand and respect it. The people calling others out for being hypocrites are ignorant. We all as a society have enjoyed his music in one way or another. “World’s Greatest” is a staple at graduations. “Happy People” was played at family reunions and cookouts. “Step In The Name of Love” was a fixture at weddings and proms. ” I Believe I Can Fly” was heard in movies such as Space Jam. In certain instances of life, you will be seen as a hypocrite when you realize what you was supporting was wrong.

The Aftermath

The Cancellation of R.Kelly will be felt by other artists and entertainers. People are being put on to deeds of artists of the past. R.Kelly and Elvis Presley share the same birthday. Elvis met his wife when she was 14 years old. R. Kelly married Aaliyah when she was 15.  I just want the people to keep that same energy for everyone. We must mute those with immoral actions, regardless if they made hit records or movies. “Surviving R.Kelly” is the starting point of bigger conversation we will have.
