With her halfway to the EGOT status, 2022 has been the year of Lizzo. The Grammy-winning star graces this month’s cover of Vanity Fair, where Lizzo gave an interview about politics, being the “best fucking flute player ever,” her beau, and also her chart-topping album “Special.”
Politics
In the interview, Lizzo spoke candidly about the recent events of police brutality and the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade. “I don’t know what they’re doing. I see they’re listening, but we’re in a post–thoughts and prayers society. Thoughts and prayers just don’t fucking cut it anymore. I’m not condemning this current administration. I’m just very curious as to what kind of real steps they can take.”
Regarding the overturn of Roe v. Wade, Lizzo also noted that she knows people who would have died had they not gone through with the procedure. As a response, she donated $500,000 to Planned Parenthood, the National Network of Abortion Funds, and encouraged Live Nation, her tour promoter, to donate another $500,000. She then adds that nothing has changed regarding hate towards black people and women, particularly black women. “As a fat Black woman, this country has never gone forward; it’s stayed pretty much the same for me.”
Lizzo Makes History
Along with her record-breaking year, Lizzo continues to make history by being the first person to play the 200-year crystal flute owned by former president James Madison at her tour stop in Washington, D.C.
“When people look back at the crystal flute, they’re going to see me playing it,” she said. “They’re going to see that it was owned by James Madison, but they’re going to see how far we’ve had to come for someone like me to be playing it in the nation’s capital, and I think that that’s a cool thing.”
While Lizzo playing the flute sparked surprising controversy, she notes that she doesn’t “want to leave history in the hands of people who uphold oppression and racism. My job as someone who has a platform is to reshape history.”
While Lizzo continues celebrating everyone around her, she also celebrates those moments with someone special. She is currently dating actor, comedian, and producer Myke Wright; the couple has known each other for around six years. “He’s everything. We’re just in love. And that’s it.” The two were recently spotted together at last month of Beyonce’s disco-themed birthday party.
As she continues to inspire black women internationally, it’s about damn time Lizzo takes the reign in the music industry.
