#HipHop4Her: The Lesson In Disappointment

When you imagine the man you’ll one day marry, which for me is very often, what is he like? Is he a good listener? Is he supportive? Is he understanding? It’s very important that as young women, we begin to look at our past relationships as lessons. Those failed relationships will surely help you in creating your ideal husband. I have a very dominate personality, and I thought I wanted a man who could hustle at my level. When I went on a date with someone that had a similar personality and work ethic as me, he made me feel very inferior which was never  acceptable to me. These series of sour dates have taught a` valuable lesson that I can one day apply to a future relationship to foster a healthy synchronized growth with a man who appreciates my entire being.

I now know that I don’t want somebody who’s as high strung as I am about work. I would prefer a man whose artistic and more relaxed than me. This is not to say that I want a hopeless dreamer lying on my couch claiming to be the next Picasso, but someone who has a different career path than me. I’m 20 years old and people tell me not to worry about these things, but my fear is that if I don’t pay attention to the signs now then I can end up becoming bitter and unmarried later. A wise woman in her 40s once told me, “it’s easy to bounce back from a heartbreak when you’re young. It’s harder to bounce back when you’re old.” Those words reaffirmed everything I believe to be important. As young women, we have to pay attention to who we invest our time in, who we forgive repeatedly, who we love unconditionally. It’s natural for us to give our entire world to a man who wouldn’t even open the door for us or vouch for a man who would drag our name through the social sphere.

Ladies, please understand that you are divine being who possesses the power to rule nations. You have long conquered this earth before anyone ever gave you credit. You fought wars within your mind that bore stress upon your physical appearance that no man could even fathom enduring. You have carried this nation in your womb to your back since the beginning and have not once complained. Soak up the knowledge that disappointing men yield and let not your heart turn bitter from their lies, but soft for the man who deserves your divine love.
