Today the world mourns the loss of legendary comedian Paul Mooney at the age of 79

Every once and again, the world loses a spark. Sadly, on Wednesday, May 19, 2021, the world lost comedic supernova, Paul Mooney.

In the early morning hours of May 19, Paul Mooney took a final bow at 79! Sources say that Mooney’s passing was the result of a heart attack. And today, the world mourns a legend. Although he is no longer with us, the mark Paul left on our lives cannot be erased!


The world widely remembers Paul Gladney “Mooney” as the keep it real Stand-up comic. And rightly so, for he was as genuine as they come. With Mooney, what you saw is what you got! He did not mince his words for anyone. Hands down, he is one of the comedic greats. Unbeknownst to some, Paul offered the world so much more than a quick laugh.

Those who know Paul Mooney also fondly remember him as a writer and actor. In fact, he and the late Richard Pryor were a dynamic comedic writing duo. And they were co-star’s bringing audiences comedic gold classics “Bustin Loose” and “Which Way is Up!”Undoubtedly, the gut-busting laughter they bought to our lives is the underpinning of classic comedy in cinema.

The depth of  Paul’s contribution to the comedy world runs deep!

He left his mark everywhere, including on series such as Sanford and Son, Saturday Night Live, and In Living Color. In fact, Mooney was the inspiration behind In Living Color fan-favorite “Homey the Clown.” His work behind the scenes is phenomenal.

But, Mooney did not merely move audiences from behind the scenes!

Paul Gladney “Mooney,” the consummate performer, stole the show on the screen. Who can forget “Negrodamus,” from the Dave Chapelle Show! And that is just one character he bought to life. Also to his film credit are Spike Lee’s Bamboozled, Meet the Blacks and the Buddy Holly Story! Mooney did it all and did it well. No one would expect anything less. Long before he lit up the comedy club, he commanded audiences as ringmaster.

What Paul Mooney is leaving the world will never be forgotten. From the reel to the script. From stage to the page, Paul Mooney made no apologies! And that candor and humor are the foundation, the bedrock that the comedic greats of today stand upon! And the world recognizes that contribution. In the words of Paul Mooney,

“… One person can change the course of the world!”

He did just that, change the world! And yesterday, industry greats; Maxwell, Stephanie Mills, Viola Davis, Kid Mero, and Ava DuVernay, to name a few, took to social media to give respects. Viola Davis said it best, Paul Mooney, “You were both funny and Poignant!”

In conclusion,  to his family and friends, we send our deepest condolences. Because today the world is a little less funny without Paul Mooney. So we stand with you in remembrance of his legacy as “The God Father of Comedy!” And may he forever rest in honor.
