Travis McMichael, Gregory McMichael, and William “Roddie” Bryan murdered Ahmaud Arbery last February, and they are now facing the consequences.
The three men are facing their sentence this morning in Brunswick, Georgia. They are all looking at life in prison.
The men were all convicted of murder and multiple other charges in November. However, the court solemnly convicted Travis McMichael of malicious murder. Travis killed Ahmaud by pulling the trigger and will receive the stiffest sentence.
Meanwhile, Gregory and William face life in prison, but parole is still an option. Depending on the judge, they may receive parole but must serve thirty years in prison under Georgia law.
Ahmaud Arbery’s Death
February 23, 2020, was when it happened. Arbery was jogging in the Satilla Shores neighborhood outside of Brunswick, Georgia. After seeing Arbery, the three killers believed he had committed a crime.
So, they chased the unarmed man through the streets. Travis McMichael and Arbery started fighting before a rifle went off at close range.
“He was trapped like a rat,” Gregory McMichael told the police. “I think he was wanting to flee, and he realized that something, you know, he was not going to get away.”
“I didn’t hit him,” William Bryan denied. “Wish I could have, might have took him out and not get him shot.”
The men pleaded not guilty to the court. They also claimed they were conducting a citizen’s arrest and acting in self-defense.
In November, eleven hours of deliberation passed before the court agreed on a verdict. There were eight days of testimonies with twenty-three witnesses. Now, those men may face life in prison for their crime, giving Arbery’s family a chance to find peace.
