Podcast host Rachel Lindsay immediately got to the shits by asking Akademiks if he believes everything he says or is lying for attention.
Akademiks explains that he studied radio and shock jocks and that he 100% believes everything he says.
Rachel then asks if he still thinks about Megan Thee Stallion having “lazy bars” and 100th percent of Nicki Minaj’s talent. Akademiks doubled down on those sentiments and continued with, “Megan is overrated as an artist.”
Later in the conversation, Van Lathan points out that “there are fewer rap purists than when Nicki was coming up,” so there is no need to compare the ladies.
When Akademiks drops this bombshell: “Megan was selected as a darling in the industry. 2020 is when the Tory Lanez thing happened. Promoting her also means we need to look at her in a different realm because she’s a victim. Once she got shot, her team looked at it like, how can we capitalize off this”.
The ongoing conversation about one woman artist not being as good as another is old. Hip Hop has evolved and will continue to do so. The constant need to compare women artists to one another is unnecessary unless the artists themselves initiate it.
In my opinion, Akademiks is biased, and that’s ok. What’s not ok is pitting women against each other when Nicki focuses on being a mom and grieving her father.
Nicki has etched her name in history, and that can’t be contested.
Let’s let Megan and the other women in Hip Hop have their moments of healing and growth without the continuous comparison.
