ASAP Rocky continues to push his “Fashion Killa” persona as he turned heads at the 2021 Met Gala. Rocky made sure his fashionista girlfriend, Rihanna, wasn’t the only reason for mentioning his name. After sporting an ERL SPRING 2022 printed, quilted cape, comments such as, “grandma’s quilt” and “ready for bed” turned out to be literal.
The Met Gala celebrated ”In America: A Lexicon of Fashion” at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. Rocky pulled up to the Met Gala fashionably with a multicolor and very eccentric cape draping his shoulders. The rapper made headlines for his comfortable look. It recently came to light that he was indeed rocking a quilt!
Rocky’s stylist, Renelou Padora, wanted a look of layers and chaos for the stylish rapper. He achieved this look through Brooklyn quilter, Zak Foster. Eli Russell Linnetz, head of ERL Designs, set out to remake a vintage puff quilt found at a thrift shop near his office in Southern California.
Significantly Sarah took to her Instagram to give us the origin of the now famous quilted design. Notably, Sarah shared that the quilt was a family heirloom.
“So my great grandmother’s quilt was donated to an antique/thrift store a while back,” she said.
Putting two and two together, she alerted her mother who found pictures of the quilt.
Speculations arose, but Sarah cleared up any confusion:
…I wanted to clarify that we aren’t accusing anyone of stealing this and we don’t want money. I posted this because I found it amazing that some thing that my great grandmother made out of love for my mother, to be used to keep her warm ,and was donated so that it might keep somebody else warm or sold to raise funds for a lovely charity, ended up being used for an amazing statement art piece by amazingly talented people who took it to the next level.
Celebrities and their “thrifty” past
Celebrities are known to wear the latest designer clothes, costing them a fortune. However, stars such as Jada Pinkett-Smith, Julia Roberts, and Eva Mendes notably shop at thrift stores. Whether to save the environment or shop for “one of a kind” looks, a long list of celebs have taken this approach to fashion.
