“If you want to call me names, go ahead. I can take it.”

Caitlyn Jenner had her first major appearance since coming out as a transgender last night, July 15, at the ESPY Awards in Los Angeles and looked absolutely stunning. Jenner was this year’s recipient of the Arthur Ashe Courage Award and gave an extremely powerful and moving speech, which was given a standing ovation.

“Trans people deserve something vital: They deserve your respect,” Jenner said. “If you want to call me names, make jokes, doubt my intentions, go ahead, because the reality is, I can take it,” she said. “But for the thousands of kids out there, coming to terms with being true to who they are, they shouldn’t have to take it.”

In her speech, Jenner shed light on the issues that trans-people face everyday. She vowed to use her platform to spread awareness for the transgender community and “do whatever I can to reshape the landscape of how transgender people are viewed and treated”.
