Detroit-native Chasey the Illest (@chaseytheillest) is a 20-year-old underground artist and rapper. In his own words, “I call it an artist because, to me a rapper just be rapping, but an artist put stories together, they focus on their words, they try to paint a picture in your mind”.
The blossoming artist recently released his Nightmare Park mixtape, with the stunning complexity of a full-length album. Made up of 17 tracks, Nightmare Park tells a story that Chasey created to express the struggles, triumphs, and complexities of growing up in Detroit.
‘Save Me’ is one of the most heart-wrenching songs on his breakout mixtape. SuperOfficialNate (@superofficialnate) shot and directed the visuals for ‘Save Me’, which brings the tragic nature of the song’s subject to life, becoming an extension of the track itself while also connecting to the magical-realistic elements of the project as a whole.
In Chasey’s words, “The video tells the story of a specific situation: a kid chasing his dreams, minding his own business, and then in an instant, it’s all taken away from him. Maybe it’s because of someone he knew, or something he did that people didn’t like, or maybe it was just senseless for no reason at all. Regardless, the tragedy of the loss is real for both the victim and for the people that loved him. I wanted to represent that pain in a way that was honest and raw.” The powerful message that the song and project portrays comes out evidently in the video.
In a recent interview, Chasey told sources that Nightmare Park was “my way of showing you how to get out of your nightmare, showing you don’t have to stay in the darkness forever”.
