Eric Garner’s family receives large settlement; claims it’s still not a victory

Nearly one year after the death of Eric Garner, the family of the man who died at the hands of New York City police officers has accepted a pretrial settlement from the city. Garner’s family, who filed a claim against the city in October 2014, will be paid $5.9 million, according to a city official.

“Following a judicious review of the claim and facts of this case, my office was able to reach a settlement with the estate of Eric Garner that is in the best interests of all parties,” said New York City Comptroller Scott Stringer.

Although the family is receiving a very large settlement, they still don’t believe the settlement is a victory. Garner’s family spoke at a press conference Tuesday morning, July 14, reacting to the settlement.

“The victory will come when we get justice,” said Garner’s mother, Gwen Carr.

“Justice,” added one of Garner’s children, Emerald Snipes, “is when somebody is held accountable for what they do.”

A grand jury declined to indict Officer Daniel Pantaleo, the officer who had Garner in a chokehold despite him repearedly pleading “I can’t breathe!”

The widow of Eric Garner, Esaw, had rejected a previous offer for a $5 million settlement.
