Mariah Carey is no stranger to number one hits. From “Vision of Love” to “Fantasy”, Mariah has topped the charts for most of her career. That’s not bad for an artist that first debuted back in 1991. Still standing strong, Mariah recently released a video teaser for her latest single “Infinity.”
While fans are anticipating her next album, her label manager and music industry veteran L.A. Reid says he isn’t expecting Carey to have a number one hit. He says that it’s simply not “realistic.”
It’s nothing personal against Mariah though. In an interview with Billboard, he mentions other artists such as Prince and Bruce Springsteen, claiming that the radio simply does not cater to artists of their caliber.
“Radio caters to in-the-moment stars… Nobody that put out records 25 years ago is going to have a No. 1. Not Paul, Stevie, Bruce, Mick or Keith. Not Prince, not anyone. So if she can get on the radio, we’ve done damn good. Would we like to have a No. 1? F– yeah, I’m greedy. But it’s not realistic.”
