Today we bow are heads to a princess. Fourteen years ago today, we lost a woman very close to our hearts – Aaliyah. She was an R&B singer with a smile that could melt your heart. She has sold 52 million records worldwide by the age of 22 and we all know her as the “Princess of R&B”. Her most popular songs are “Age Ain’t Nothing but a Number”, “Try Again” and my personal favorite “One in a million” which all hit the top Billboard 100, making her the tenth most successful female R&B artist. On August 25, 2001 we lost our beloved angel in a plane crash with 8 other people leaving the Bahamas after filming her song “Rock the Boat”. I know we all still get chills down our spine watching the music video, knowing that is the last time we’ll see her. However, let’s take the anniversary of her death as a way to remember and acknowledge her beautiful soul, along with the euphoria she brought to millions.

Here are 5 facts about Aaliyah:

1. Aaliyah’s name means “highest, most exalted one” in Arabic.

2. The song “4 page letter” was written by her brother Rashad.

3. Diana (Aaliyah’s mother) inspired Aaliyah’s trademark hairstyle with covering her one eye with her hair by her favorite actress – Veronica Lake.

4. Aaliyah and Missy Elliot made a bet on who would wear a dress first since they both had similar tomboy styles.

5. After Aaliyah’s death, New York City and Central Park Conservancy dedicated a weeping willow tree in her honor in Central Park.
