Donald Glover has confirmed that he has more music on the way. This is after he had said he would not do more music in 2017. This is not a surprise to anyone that follows him.
Glover had made the stage name Childish Gambino through a Wu-Tang Clan name generator. While he was mainly known at this point as an actor, he switched his main focus to music in 2009. He mainly focused on his music career from 2009 to around 2015, when he switched back to focusing on acting.
Glover moves away from music
In 2017, during the Governor’s Ball Music Festival, Glover announced that he is retiring the Childish Gambino name after the next album release. He explained in an interview that he felt that his music career was no longer necessary and that he did not feel a need to do more with it any longer.
That final album release was done in an interesting way. On March 15, 2020, Glover streamed the album for 12 hours on his personal website, on a loop, until it was taken down. A week later he released it to streaming services as 3.15.20, to commemorate the stream. In a tweet, he said his next music project will be the biggest by far. He did so, shortly after promoting Atlanta seasons 3 and 4. However, that project has not been released yet.
Apparently what he meant was that he was just taking a break. On Jan. 10, E! News had interviewed Glover at the Red Carpet 80th Annual Golden Globe Awards. He talked about his music there.
“I’m making music right now. I love it. I’m actually in the studio. I’ve been bringing people in, like secret people, working on little things. I’ve been just making it for fun right now. But soon something will happen. I promise.”
When asked about his claim of retiring Childish Gambino, he said to not worry about it. He is making music again and that is what is important.
Glover alternates between his two passions of music and acting until he becomes tired of his current focus and switches to the other. There is no way that he is going to permanently move away from either. He just goes on hiatuses until he is ready to continue.
