Chris Brown’s history of abuse speaks volumes, but what is it telling us?

The latest allegations involving Chris Brown indicate another issue that’s in play. History of abuse tracks a pattern of behavior and foretells future acts, suggesting little promise for rehabilitative treatment.

Unfortunately, Brown’s history is rife with incidents of abusive behavior.

Brown’s most publicized accusation of abuse involved the assault of rising superstar Rihanna. Outlets went crazy with press coverage of the issue.  But the assault did not happen in isolation. According to reports on his sentencing, Brown committed serial acts of abuse against Rihanna’s person. There were two incidents in particular that took place before the one that became publicly documented. This was the first clue that he needed professional help.

There was a pattern, and that pattern did not go unrecognized at sentencing. His initial sentence called for for five years’ probation.  In addition, he was ordered to complete 1,400 hours of service and counseling for acts of domestic violence.  A judge confirmed that Brown was participating in that probation agreement in 2015, according to one source.

Did Chris Brown complete the counseling?

There is no public record of whether Brown completed his counseling. If he did complete counseling, where is the proof of rehabilitation?  We know that Brown went to counseling. The rehabilitation center entered a report in 2014 on the possible cause of Brown’s behaviors, according to a source. There was an accompanying recommendation for his continued care.

“Brown’s aggression was believed to be caused by bipolar disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and drug use,” said the report. “On further recommendation, Mr. Brown will also need close supervision by his treating physician to ensure his bipolar mental health condition remains stable.”

There are no assurances that Brown benefited from these resources. And given the events following 2014, it is even more speculative to assume whether Brown even came close to fulfilling his initial sentence requirements.

Incidents that followed offer proof that severe underlying issues remain untreated.

In 2011 Brown’s new love interest became public news. He began dating Karrueche Tran while he was still on probation for his 2009 incident. Somehow, despite his counseling order, his pattern of abuse continued. Tran went on to seek legal recourse against Brown for his abusive behavior against her. She provided evidence of abusive voicemails and threatening text messages, and during the court hearing, a record of approval for Tran’s temporary restraining order surfaced. This earlier restraining order resulted from incidents of abuse against her person.

“The singer [Brown] punched her in the stomach and pushed her downstairs a few years prior,” the statement reads.

In 2017 the court granted Tran a five-year restraining order.

In 2016 Brown participated in a police standoff over allegations of threatening a woman with a weapon. Despite the nine-hour gridlock, neither Brown nor his legal team offered an easy explanation for the incident. Brown’s lawyer advanced an argument that the charges were false, and since then the case has not moved forward.

In 2019 Brown was arrested in Paris on charges of raping a 24-year-old woman in his hotel suite. He entered police custody on the morning of January 22. Later that day, he saw release. Even so, the investigation remained ongoing. Brown vehemently denied the charge. His legal team threatened to file slander and libel suits, but the woman’s legal team described a compelling recollection of events. In an interview the woman recollected in detail all the events of the alleged rape. Her legal team arranged for a meeting in May of 2019 with the defense, but Brown’s defense did not appear for the meeting. The investigation remains ongoing.

Now Brown is once again in the news for assault.

Now Brown has gained further notoriety as the subject of another criminal report, but he has offered no response yet to the charge. He has, however, taken to social media since the event went public, and his remarks, if related, are especially flippant given the magnitude of the matter.

It is still unclear whether Brown followed through on his counseling obligations or that these offered any benefit. His history of violence is mired in more than conjecture. There is a public record of his abuse, with many reports of ongoing behavior. For him to make a mockery of any allegations at this point is pretty sketchy. Actions speak louder than words, and even the words Brown posts suggest little chance of reform, so whatever accountability lies ahead for Brown could likely take the form of another high-profile trainwreck.
