Portland news outlet Fox 12 reported a shooting around 5:00 a.m. on Tuesday involving cousins 12 O’Clock and Murdock of Brooklyn Zu. Three more were also hospitalized with injuries.
Commenting on the investigation, Portland Police Lieutenant Greg Pashley reported, “detectives have a lot of work to do on top of all the other cases they’re already working.” He also claimed his heart “out to victims and their families.”
The Response From the Community
Multiple people from the industry responded to artists’ deaths. Son of Ol’ Dirty Bastard posted on Instagram with this caption:
“My Older Cousins
Rip 12 ‘O Clock
Rip Murdock
They Were My Fathers Tightest blood Bonds
…
Love Yalllllll
Blood Forever
Brooklyn Zu”
The deaths of Hip-Hop veterans also got a mourning response from the bigger part of community. HORNZ, Phace, and Tesla’s Ghost posted condolences on Twitter. Divine Turner also posted on Instagram stories.
The Legacy
Brooklyn Zu was a group of Wu-Tang member Ol Dirty Bastard. In 2008 group honored ODB with Chamber #9 Verse 32 release. Songs there include “If I Had A Gun” with RZA, “Brooklyn Zu,” and more. The group also recorded “Protect Ya Neck II The Zoo” and more songs with ODB himself.
The influence of Wu-Tang, Ol Dirty Bastard, and other Brooklyn Zu affiliates for hip-hop is hard to measure. It will probably take a couple of decades with multiple university studies to figure these questions out. Deaths of 12 O’Clock and Murdock is not only a life tragedy; it’s a tragedy for Hip-Hop culture and history.
FMHipHop sends condolences to the 12 O’Clock and Murdock families and wishes the injured victims to feel better as soon as possible.
