Da Baby is in hot water after his “Beatbox” Freestyle hit the internet a few days ago. Children in bright hairbows want to fight him, and adults are confused about why Da Baby seemingly called JoJo Siwa a Bi*ch. The line in question? “You a bitch, JoJo Siwa Bi*ch.” Contrary to popular belief, he’s not guilty of calling a child out of her name, but he is guilty of reaching for the stars and falling on his face with that line. The explanation: “My wordplay went over their heads.”
It appears Da Baby was trying to execute a homophone in this freestyle; (a word having the same sound/pronunciation as another, but differing in meaning and usually in spelling). Many rappers had done it before and nailed it, others not so much. This bar from Da Baby falls into the latter category. Trying to force a homophone with “Siwa” to equate to “See Why” is cringeworthy and a no-no. In reference to bad lyrics, this is something we’ve been seeing more frequently, and it needs to stop. In this case, the bar was simply garbage, and there’s no coming back from it. We are all ignoring the utter failure of Da Baby’s lyrical prowess. It didn’t go over our heads; it was just awful. I’m sure he’ll recover, but he should remember; if you have to force it, it’s probably not right. Also, keep children’s names out of your mouth; you don’t want it with the Siwanators. I’m sure his adorable 3-year-old gave him a stern talking to after this.
