DaBaby’s “Find My Way” Could Be The Next Step In Hip-Hop

From the start of its creation, hip-hop music and its artists have had their hand in several different cultural aspects. From fashion to film to sports to other genres of music, hip-hop and rap have always had a way of uniquely collaborating. For DaBaby‘s song “Find My Way,” he found his way of doing this by turning his music video into a ten-minute short film.

The story it tells is that of action, love, racial tension, and trying to do the right thing in a messed up world. DaBaby plays a guy that is struggling to make money for his grandmother and decides to start robbing to make ends meet. Social Media influencer, B. Simone, plays his ride-or-die girl and is mainly what the song is about.

It begins with DaBaby giving a monologue that explains why he’s doing what he’s doing and also introduces B. Simone. After a couple of minutes, it cuts into “Find My Way.” During the music, it becomes a montage of him and his girl going around the southwest and robbing convenience stores. You can see the characters getting more nervous as the song continues, and when it stops, we are left with a five-minute scene straight out of a movie. As ‘Bonnie and Clyde’ continue their spree, they stay at a sketchy motel in the middle of nowhere for a night. The owners of it turn out to be incredibly racist and seem to know that DaBaby and his girl are the robbers they have heard about on the radio. The whole video comes to a climax at the very end when DaBaby has a shoot out with a pack of rednecks, ultimately winning.

Although the acting and the script seem to be subpar all around, this project could be massive for the hip-hop genre. It’s not the first time something like this has been done. Rap icon, Eminem, did something similar with his song “Stan” and J. Cole with “4 Your Eyes Only”, but partnering with a social media star and speaking towards race issues in America makes this unique.
