10 years after releasing the fantastic ‘XXX,’ Danny Brown confirms that his next project is called ‘XXXX’ or ’40’. Since Brown made the former at age 30 (hence the title), this will be a spiritual sequel. Fake Shore Drive’s Andrew Barber recently sat down with Brown, who shares plenty of new details about the project.
“I Might Be Whack!”
When Danny began writing the album, he thought he might have fallen off because “the shit was trash!” With the depression of the pandemic, he then figured out a way to write himself out of the melancholy and improve the writing itself as well. Hilariously, he took inspiration from George Clinton and decided to record five songs while tripping on LSD and realized how good it sounded the next day. After that, he decided to “visit the spirit realm a few times” for further recording.
Most excitingly, the Detroit MC says that the album is in its post-production phase. While the previous album had Q-Tip exec-producing, Brown says individual producers have more free reign on this one. There’s little info about who’s on the boards for this album except KNXWLEDGE and The Alchemist contributions. There’s simply no way that this misses!
“I’m Just Happy to be Here”
When considering Danny’s catalog, this album deserves widespread anticipation. His seminal ‘XXX’ is one of the all-time great mixtapes from the 2010’s blog era. The follow up, ‘Old,’ is one of the more cerebral banger albums out there, demonstrating his massive versatility. 2016’s ‘Atrocity Exhibition’ is not only Brown’s best work, but is one of the best works of modern Hip-Hop; a true underground masterpiece. His 2019 project, ‘uknowhatimsayin¿’ is his most different sounding work but just as impressive as ever. What’s amazing is that he came into the game so late, thus he continues to feel grateful for being included.
If being potentially the best underground rapper of the 2010’s isn’t enough, Danny has taken an interest in behind the scenes work. Danny Brown leads Detroit’s ‘Bruiser Brigade’ label, in which multiple of his crewmates released projects this year. With this also came a full label project called ‘TV62,’ executive produced by Brown. With Danny’s tough background, it’s awesome to see him succeed and bring his friends with him. As Danny continues to elevate the culture, there’s no doubt that ‘XXXX’ or ’40’ will be a standout release in the year.
