Dave Chappelle has postponed a fundraiser at his former high school after students said they would walk out. The fundraiser’s goal is to help the high school earn a new theater. The future theater will be named after the famous comedian. Initially, the fundraiser was going to happen later this month. But now, it’s pushed to April 2022.
Students are choosing to step out because of Chappelle’s comments about the LGBTQ+ community. His special The Closer contains jokes toward the trans community.
The school says they will be holding “listening sessions” for students to speak about their concerns.
They will also be upgrading their social studies curriculum to speak more on political activism, civic engagement, arts activism, race, gender, and sexuality.
Dave Chappelle stands firmly on what he said. During his show in Nashville last month, he states, “I said what I said.” However, he said he’s willing to meet with members of the LGBTQ community. Several individuals have called his special transphobic.
Dave Chappelle began pursuing a career in stand-up comedy in high school. He made his film debut in Robin Hood: Men In Tights in 1993 and starred in the stoner comedy Half Baked later in the decade. The comedian hit the big time in 2003 with the launch of Chappelle’s Show before he abruptly walked away from the wildly popular program on the eve of its third season. Chappelle resumed touring as a stand-up comic in 2013 and later delivered a series of acclaimed specials for Netflix.
