Doechii is still riding high off her TDE debut and celebrating a progression in her career. However, today Doechii found out her current release, “Crazy,” will not be getting as much coverage as her release “Persuasive.” Doechii has recently received news that “Crazy” will be banned from trending on YouTube due to its explicit nature.
Doechii’s “Crazy” Banned.
What is explicit about “Crazy?” Why was the single banned?
According to sources, “Crazy” is being banned because it displays nudity and violence. And the social media gatekeepers have found it inappropriate for shares that will likely rank it as a trending single. However, while the social media powers have deemed the video over the top in these areas, Sarah C. Prinz, video director, disagrees with this sentiment. In the words of Prinz
“The film is an expansive metaphor embodying the hardships women go through in their ascension to power.”
The Deeper Truth
Fundamentally “Crazy” is a work of art with more profound significance than what is on visual display. But to see this, one must look beyond the visuals to the message to get to the core.
What is The Message?
According to Prinz, it is a message of feminine empowerment. As she so eloquently phrased it,
“It’s a piece that empowers the exponential capacity of women in the 21st century, in every form of their being.”
As one must agree, the lens of the creator and the viewer does not provide the same clarity.
Wide-Angled View of Doechii’s Piece
Some artistic liberties taken in the video can be seen as very provocative. However, conversely, some things are put in place that mute some elements that would make the presentation vulgar.
Regardless of the artistry, depending on the viewer, one may see offensive material while others have a more holistic view of what is presented. Truthfully, art is always in the eye of the beholder.
Doechii’s Art
What Doechii is doing in her work is groundbreaking. The edge she walks is a large part of her vision. One must merely consider Doechii’s current sentiments to get a clearer picture. The artist speaks of her new home at Top Dawg and her creative vision in a moment of delight.
“I want to create a new vision, a new lane, and so much music.”
“Crazy” gives fans a glimpse of that.
The Take-Away
Given her recent piece, it is clear that she is on a different plane with her craft. One only needs to look a little bit deeper.
Nevertheless, one has to make of the ban what they may. That’s the way of social media and regulations (red tape). However, it would be a disservice to use the decision of one body to govern the quality of a project. So, with great respect, we convey the message Doechii and Prinz wish to share,
“Both I and Doechii have worked extensively over the last 4 months developing the narrative of this film, intentionally and meticulously crafting each scene and frame to tell a story derived from both of our personal and shared experiences mirroring the character arc of her new album with TDE.”
Admittedly that is admirable.
We applaud Doechii’s artistry and respect her vision. Hip Hop has always been about pushing the boundaries of art, shaping it, and forming it from the clay of experience to share a more profound truth. We celebrate Hip-hop in its various forms.
