Drake is extremely supportive of Lil Yachty’s new project, despite its deviation from his typical rap style.

Last Friday, Lil Yachty released his fifth studio album Let’s Start Here. To the surprise of his fanbase, Let’s Start Here is an exploration of the psychedelic rock genre. This is a large contrast from Yachty’s typical lighthearted rap, but the risk is apparently paying off in spades.

Drake Showing Love

Of course, Drake was in attendance of Lil Boat’s album release party in New Jersey. The Views rapper quickly took to Instagram to give his take on the record. On his Instagram story, he calls the album a “masterpiece” and labels all 14 tracks as either perfect or 11/10.

A New Direction

With a step into a brand new genre for Yachty, initial reviews were mixed. However, it appears many of his industry peers are extremely impressed with the project. This includes Questlove of The Roots and Schoolboy Q.

“How should I put it? I really really really really love this @lilyachty record and I love when artists pull off a good departure record,” Questlove typed on Instagram. “This aptly titled #LetsStartHere lp might be the most surprising transition of any music career I’ve witnessed in a min, especially under the umbrella of hip hop.” He finished. Surprising is certainly an understatement. Lil Yachty came into the music scene in 2015 with his Lil Boat mixtape. At the time, the young artist employed playful, unserious instrumentals and production to accompany his unique voice and rap style. This laid-back aesthetic and sound led to big hits like ‘Minnesota’, ‘Broccoli’, ‘ispy’, ‘One Night’, and ‘Wanna Be Us’.

During his star-studded album listening party, Yachty explained what led him to switch up his style.

“I think I created this just because I really wanted to be taken serious as an artist. Not just some Soundcloud rapper, not just some mumble rapper, not some guy that made one hit. You know, I wanted to be taken serious because music is like everything to me” he expounded. “I respect all walks of music. Not just rap and hip-hop but everything. If we gon’ be honest, there’s just a lot of n***as started copying the swag. And I felt like, cool, well, if everyone can do this then that’s fine but I’m going to show you what y’all can’t do”
