Drake always manages to maneuver through the game his own way. Separating himself can sometimes be seen as difficult and bratty, other times, very clever. This time I’d say he was being pleasantly clever.
By taking Sotheby’s up on their offer to curate music at an art showing, Drake is lengthening his resume, and extending himself into an avenue we probably wouldn’t initially expect.
One thing I think all people can agree on, is the fact that Drake is serious about his rap craft and progression, and seems to hold a very passionate regard for music. He’s fresh, young, agile, and from the looks of it, has a strong future ahead of him. Apparently for Sotheby’s, he was an ideal option.
The details are as follows, Sotheby’s is holding an art exhibit entitled, I Like It Like This, for the contemporary art department of the auction house, S|2, featuring contemporary works by black artists, including, but not limited to, Kara Walker, Jean-Michel Basquiat, and Kehinde Wiley.
Essentially, what this collaboration is suppose to accomplish is Drake, feeling and relating to an art piece, picks songs, that an observer of the art will hear through headphones, that he feels compliments the painting in whatever fashion he prefers. Being that his work proves he’s a student of his craft, this could work out very well.
I’d have to admit, drakes presence in all of this, and some of the songs used, seem very bazaar. For example, Jean-Michel Basquiat’s, Untitled (Devil’s Head) paired with Makonnen, “Rumor (Acoustic)” This is definitely something I’d be curious to experience. The exhibit is open to the public at Sotheby’s in NYC until June 12th. You can also view the pieces online at Sotheby’s site, here.
Below, Drake expresses what this opportunity was for him while wearing a collarless white jean jacket. I’ve never seen anything like this, lol. Go figure Drake.
