Atlanta rap duo, EARTHGANG, has been talking about their follow-up to 2019’s ‘Mirrorland’ for quite some time. The upcoming LP, titled ‘Ghetto Gods,’ has already missed teased release dates but the duo has no intention of letting down their fans.
While the group consists of two members, Doctur Dot/wowgr8 and Johnny Venus/Olu, they use a shared twitter when speaking for the duo. When J. Cole first announced that ‘The Off Season’ was dropping on May 14, they retweeted it, saying they’re going to drop on the same day. The day came and went without an EG release, but they knew that fans had empty stomachs. To hold us off, they put out their remix of Drake and Rick Ross’ ‘Lemon Pepper Freestyle’. In this video, they pay tribute to tragically departed MC’s such as Mac Miller and DMX. Johnny Venus uses his verse to say, “Release date what I’m waitin’ on, Interscope gotta crunch the numbers,” informing fans that they want this drop as much as we do.
“Touring all 2022”
The most recent update came from a post by EARTHGANG on Reddit, in which the first words are “Album coming after Lolla.” While this might hurt some fans who want to see EG do some new tracks live, there’s no doubt that they’ll bring it. Though under heralded, the duo has gained serious notoriety for having of some of the most fun and energetic concerts of any current rap act.
In the same post, they announced that until the LP drops, they will roll out five songs to hold fans over. One song, ‘Aretha,’ came out earlier this week and completely hits the spot. At midnight, they also put out a remix to their song with Wale, ‘Options,’ this time featuring up and comer Coi Leray, though likely not on the upcoming LP. They also detail that this is their “most complete and succinct album since ‘Strays with Rabies'” and is executively produced by the Dungeon Family’s KP. While they insist it sounds like nothing they’ve done before, true fans know that any comparison to ‘Strays with Rabies’ means this will be worth checking.
Holding the title of “The New OutKast” is no easy feat. Dot and Venus consistently put out better music than most Atlanta rappers, despite it being the current center of Hip-Hop. With their underrated classic tapes, a string of terrific EP’s in 2018, widely enjoyed ‘Mirrorland,’ and successful ‘Spillage Village‘ projects, the expectations are nice and high for ‘Ghetto Gods.’
