SZA Drops Self Directed Music Video For Song “Hit Different”
Following the release of her new song “Hit Different ft. Ty Dolla $ign”, SZA dropped the long awaited music video for the song. The video was her directorial debut and was produced by iconic 90’s production duo The Neptunes. As a result, the video plays homage to it’s 90s R&B undertones while reflecting the complexity of SZA’s new song.
The song is seemingly upbeat while lyrically cynical, complex and honest. The music video functions the same way. On the surface it is a classic 90’s style R&B video with a choreographed dance group but the intercut shots of SZA in blood and the gritty background of a Junkyard take it to a different level.
Thank y’all for fucking w me…I be in the house In my head so much.. it’s hard..I’m ready to come outside more often .. thanks for helping me realize that 🥺🙏🏾❤️ pic.twitter.com/F7iOikZ7Bp
SZA took to twitter in response to the mass critical acclaim the video has received. After voicing frustration on having to delay her music release, the drop was widely anticipated and met with instant praise. The video contains moments that feel tribute to other iconic moments of music. Everyone from Solange to Patrice Rushen to her producer team The Neptunes are subtly paid homage to in the video.
Simply speaking, the song follows a woman’s quest for love while fighting with the knowledge of the pain it will cause. It plays with 90’s love songs and modern femininity and the psychology of self sacrifice in love.
Nearing 4 Million views on YouTube only 3 days after its release is the perfect reflection to SZAs quick rise to fame. At only 29 years old, the world can expect to see a great deal more from her in her continuously expanding music career. And as proved by her new video, SZA’s director career is far from over. This new video can only prove a positive addition to the music industry.
