With age comes wisdom, I believe that is how the old saying goes. I wonder what I would write to my 2006 self. I was 16 in 2006.Meek Mill was 19. 19 year old Meek Mill and 31 year old Meek Mill are two totally different people. Meek was still battling rapping and writing a letter to the you that would accomplish a lot and go through nightmares to achieve his dreams. In 2006, Bush was President and the world seen Hurricane Katrina the year before. Meek states that black lives won’t matter much more than they do in 2006.
2006 vs 2018
Meek goes ” I’ll be honest- same as African Americans in this country- things are about to get both easier and more difficult for you.” ” Over the next decade, you and your people will make major moves- you, professionally and Black people politically. In 2006, before the movement of a Black Lives Matter, Sean Bell was shot and killed by police on his wedding day. In 2018, its almost like every other day an unarmed black men is shot and killed by police. The more we advance as a society and a people, things remain the same.
Now & Then
If you would have told me and Meek in 2006 that Kanye would go from ” George Bush doesn’t care about black people to rocking a MAGA hat. We wouldn’t believe you. Or how we went from Bush to elect the first black President in Barack Obama and to go to from him to Trump. The biggest surprise would be how Mike Vick gets arrested for dogfighting and get let back into the NFL. Colin Kaepernick would protest police brutality and get blackballed. We have made strides in a decade and still have ways to go.
