Black People in America have always had to express the pain and oppression we’ve felt though our music. From early days of Jazz and Bebop, to modern day HipHip. Our voices have always rang truth. Heres a list of powerful songs from black voices that express the heaviness Black America has always felt.

 

#10 Police State – Dead Prez

‘Police State’ is about the militant police force in America and the grasp that they have on the black community.

 

 

#9 Strange Fruit – Billie Holiday

One of the first major political songs in history, Mrs. Holiday put on a brave display in storytelling about the lynchings in America.

 

 

#8 The Revolution Will Not Be Televised – Gil Scott Heron

This songs timeless relevance is unmatched. The story telling going on is sad and frightening, the same fight Heron was talking about in 1971 is still the same reality of our nation today.

#7 Alright – Kendrick Lamar

There is a need to be uplifted, especially in times of doubt and uncertainty. K. Dot exemplified the heart and soul of the community with this powerful and motivating message. We actually will be alright.

 

#6 16 Shots – Vic Mensa

Our ancestors and grandparents fought for our rights peacefully and very little has changed.  The new generation of Black Americans refuse to sit back and watch our people be hunted. Mensa voices the exact pain and anger we all feel.

 

#5 Say It Loud – I’m Black And I’m Proud- James Brown

The song all of us have heard at every cookout and holiday party.  ‘Say It Loud I’m Black And I’m Proud is a negro spiritual that gives you so much pride and joy to be black.

 

#4 Fight The Power- Public Enemy

Rage, that’s what black people feel in this country. Consequently it’s only a matter of time before we have to fight back.

With a performance on late night tv and a release on soundcloud, Cole gives you chills with this heartfelt melody on police brutality.

One thing that hasn’t changed over the years is Americas terrible choices in electing presidents.

Energy of Black Americans was put on a record and this is it. You can feel the passion and power in every word. Police brutality has been in our past and it continues today.
