#FMSpotlight: Breana Marin – “Personal” (Listen)

Published

on

Breana Marin confronts a dilemma with her boo head-on in “Personal.” Her raw lyrics and mesmerizing register are met with a build-up of percussions, white noise, and R&B/alternative rock arrangements.

From the very start, Breana Marin lays her emotions on the table, saying, “Not sure how much more I can take/You love to speak before you think, yea/The words you choose cut me deep.

After, the singer tells him how hurtful his comments can be. Minor disagreements turn into full-blown arguments when the two aren’t seeing eye to eye. At this moment, Marin is considering calling it quits.

“‘Personal’ is about that argument or tough conversation we’ve all had with someone we’re in a relationship with. Buttons are pushed, lines are crossed, and then someone says something that can’t be taken back or unheard,” Breana Marin explains.

As the song progresses, she thinks back to her lover’s comments about her communication style. Then, Marin explains why she verbally retaliates.

She sings, “I’m only protecting me/Looking out for me/Hurt me/Then I’m a hurt you harder.”

In the end, Marin doesn’t want to break up with her sweetheart. Sure, they might bruise each other’s egos, but through it all, they can’t see themselves with anyone else.

Not resolving their issues only makes it worse, Marin implies.

Why’d you have to go/Don’t wanna say something I don’t mean,” she sings.
