#FMSpotlight: Kailaya – “Lately” (Listen)

Kailaya reflects on a previous relationship that she once held close to her heart in “Lately.” She remains 100% transparent about how the breakup has affected her. Moreover, the R&B singer is confident that her ex will come to regret his decision. After all, the grass isn’t greener on the other side. The beat, produced by Aubren Elaine, blends soul and jazz elements. Throughout the song, she amplifies her airy, soulful range.

Kailaya’s Ambivalence

I broke into pieces; how could you not see it,” Kailaya asks in one of her songs. “I have been tired of feeling I wasn’t enough for you/Maybe/You were the one that had lost a love bigger than life/And lately/I’m not afraid to admit that you screwed this one up.”

Kailaya continues to be open about the downfall of their relationship. She wonders what part she had in their falling out. At the same time, the musician is fed up with trying to be the ideal woman for him. No matter how much she tries to resent him, she can’t. Despite their split, Kailaya will always care for and love him.

You can’t blame me/For wondering what I did wrong,” she sings. Secondly, Kailaya says, “I don’t blame you/For wanting a better life/I still don’t hate you/Oh God knows how I tried. “

About the song’s meaning, Kailaya says

“I wrote ‘Lately’ in a time of my life when I needed to practice the art of letting go. The track acted as a way for me to let go of the hurt and pain I was feeling. I slowly rebuilded the experiences I felt so disconnected from.”

As a Ukrainian-American, Kailaya will be donating the proceeds of her new single to Lifelover. This charity provides humanitarian aid and helps the elderly community affected by the war in Ukraine.
