Watch: Shawn Smith – “Braggadocious” (Music Video)
Having already a co-sign by rap icons like Black Thought, Philly-based rapper, ShawnSmith only goes to prove that golden slated hip-hop isn’t entirely dead. As he taps into a ’90’s hip-hop sensibility, Shawn speaks on ongoing issues within our society, yet still reminds listeners that there is hope. Additionally, the storytelling lyricist goes in-depth about his upbringing and things he has seen or heard. The credibility behind his accomplishments and success all goes to the man upstairs.
“I figure I can be a spokesperson because they never gon’ be able to tell their own story,” he says of his Southwest Philly friends and family to Genius. “People being aware of that cycle [of poverty] could open their minds up.”
Shawn Smith, formerly known as Young Savage, put his career in further motion after delivering his viral, 20-minute freestyle on “The Come Up Show,” which now sits at over 1 million+ views. Likewise, he performed in the 2018 BET Hip-Hop Awards Cypher with Casanova, Phora, and Reason. His debut project, Hurt People, Hurt People, was released in 2019.
More recently, Shawn Smith released “Braggadocious.” The song itself is a bassy saxophone-led hip-hop offering that sees Shawn laying out skillfully constructed rhymes about his unwavering focus, loyalty, staying on his P’s and Q’s and the dark truth behind slinging drugs in the hood.
Additionally, Shawn Smith gets transparent when speaking on his previous dealings. In one line, he even presents the world with a witty entendre. Shawn delivers,
“The youngest in my hood have some simple minds/Grab the monthly magazine so they can issue crime/Friendly neighborhood drug dealers that lend you dimes/But they dance with street sweepers like they was Genuine.”
Towards the minute-and-thirty second mark, he sings with a soulful register, “I seen blood turn to water, I seen love go away/All my faiths stay in order/All my pain through the day.” Before the song ends, Shawn forewarns those who are thinking about challenging him. He also goes in about protecting his family at all costs.
