#FMSpotlight: Southside Hoodlum – ‘Lord Knows’ (Listen)

Listen to Southside Hoodlum – ‘Lord Knows’

San Antonio rapper, Southside Hoodlum, has officially dropped his project, Lord Knows. Contrary to the title, this is not a faith-centered album (although there is a song called “Gospel” and “Heaven”). In actuality, Lord Knows holds unfiltered bars. Southside Hoodlum raps about his luxurious lifestyle, charm, and unwavering hustle. He also sheds light on his success story

Not to mention Southside Hoodlum informs his haters that they will be dealt with if they decide to speak down on him. He couples this with digestible time frames for each record, making it a more refreshing and memorable listen. Along with this, he distinguishes himself with a hazy yet clear-cut cadence. Lord Knows follows Hoodlum’s debut project, Orange Tape (June 2020), and its chopped-and-screwed follow-up, Purple Tape, which pays homage to Houston, TX hip-hop legend DJ Screw

There are currently visuals for songs off the project: “Gospel,” “No Ceilings,” “Million,” and “BreatheIn total, these four songs have scored 1M views on their music videos. Two songs that I will be speaking about are “Gospel” and “Million.”

Just like the title reads, “Gospel” carries a soundscape akin to music that you’d hear in church. Amidst the passionate vocals from what sounds like a choir and the booming bassline, Southside Hoodlum raps about how he protects himself from being in harm’s way. He also opens up about how important his family is to him and makes sure they’re set for life.

Million” is an eerie trap offering that compliments Southside Hoodlum’s direct rhymes. He raps about “keeping a pole cause he’s not dying today,” getting to the bag, his exotic kush, and why haters feel the need to talk sideways. Despite this, he says that he’s going to focus on making figures. Also, Southside Hoodlum expresses how important it is to invest in him now. The ultimate plan is to make racks on racks.

About Southside Hoodlum:

The Pitchfork featured artist’s name is a nod to the teachers and authoritarians who’d call him a hoodlum – he took the slur, coupled it with his beloved region, and embraced the title with pride.

Hoodlum is keen on repping San Antonio’s southside as he believes his community lacks hope, representation, and inspiration.

He described his neighborhood as hectic and inundated with delinquency. The rapper’s teens were centered around hustling, drugs, and his friend group. He got into drugs at the tender age of eleven years old and approached the gateway from weed to lean at thirteen. It wasn’t until his heart stopped at age seventeen that Hoodlum decided to lay off the codeine.

About two years ago, Hoodlum began taking music more seriously than your occasional freestyle. He teamed up with his childhood friend and videographer, Ace, on releasing all his work, including projects, Orange Tape and Purple Tape. Having amassed nearly ten million views coupled with the release of new visuals and more new music on the way, Hoodlum is putting his city on the map and cementing his artist to watch status in 2021.
