Jay-Z gives a refreshing perspective on the emotional aspects of men in his latest video, MaNyfaCedGod.
To help shape the story line for the bonus track from 4:44, Jay-Z tapped British musician James Blake, music video director Francesco Carrozzini and Academy Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o.
The feeling of love, heartache, betrayal, and rebirth of unconditional love came full circle in the black and white themed video.
Some describe the MaNyfaCedGod video as “trials and tribulations of a broken relationship on the mend.” But, if you watch the Footnotes video, you’ll find that Jay-Z dug deep to get his point across. He opened up to discuss how and why most men feel defenseless in a relationship.
Childhood poverty, abandonment, and disappointment are just some of the reasons. If you listen carefully and you’ll hear Jay-Z try to explain: “I was worried that the way I was would end me up alone.”
More than a dozen men gave a glimpse into their emotional diaries. Anthony Anderson, Trevor Noah, Chris Rock, Meek Mill and several other celebrities explained the internal pressures of being a strong partner.
“When we look at trying to be something for other people, specifically men, it is this constant barrage of ‘You’ve got to be the man in the relationship!’” Jesse Williams explained. “What does that mean? Does that mean to have courage? And courage to do what?”
Williams continued to ask if being a man meant to be a “leader” or “physically strong.” The eye opener to these questions for the Grey’s Anatomy star is that neither of these characteristics defines what a man is or should be. “The weakest people I ever met in my life have been physically strong men.”
Dear Men of MaNyfaCedGod,
Thank you for sharing your emotional struggles. Your stories will help men, and women, understand each other better.
