From Internet Meme to Breaking Drake’s Streaming Record

The “Old Town Road” remix featuring Bill Ray Cyrus is perhaps one of the most popular songs of the year so far. The song started out as the soundtrack to the infamous “Yeehaw” challenge online. Even though Billboard quickly took the song off the country charts for not being country enough, the song still managed to smash Drake’s streaming record.

The song by up-and-coming artist, Lil Nas X, gained 143 million streams within its first week of release. Drake had held onto his record since the summer of 2018 when he released “In My Feelings”. This song earned 116 million streams in one week. This song coincidentally also had an internet challenge that went along with it. It seems that some of the most popular songs nowadays gain their fame by accompanying a fun online challenge which allows more streams to the song. Old Town Road has always earned recognition from big names backing it up. Billy Ray Cyrus took to Twitter to express his distaste for the song beginning taken off the Billboard Country charts. Country star Keith Urban has also posted a cover of the song himself.
