This being Spike’s first Oscar is nuts. He made Malcolm X, Do The Right Thing, and Jungle Fever.BlacKkKlansman was the first movie that got him nominated for Best Director and Best Picture. Denzel Washington was nominated for Best Actor in Malcolm X, but lost to Al Pacino for Scent of a Woman. Ironically, BlacKkKlansman stars Denzel’s son John David Washington. The film was nominated for 6 awards and won 1-Best Adapted Screenplay.
The Oscar Win is Nice, But Spike’s Impact is Greater.
I have been on record saying Spike Lee doesn’t need an Academy Award for validation. His impact on society is far greater. Films like Do The Right Thing and Malcolm X have been deemed culturally significant by the Library of Congress and selected for preservation. Jungle Fever had Wesley Snipes in his prime along with Samuel L. Jackson and Halle Berry. The themes of his movies will always be current in society. Jungle Fever dealt with Interracial dating(affair) and the effects of the crack era. Do The Right Thing dealt with race relations and police in the inner-city. Malcolm X is one of the most powerful movies I ever saw. Every time I see an NCAA recruiting scandal He Got Game comes to mind.
The Influence of Spike Lee
Jordan Peele probably looked up to Spike Lee. I would think the same of Ryan Coogler. The actors he collaborated with went on to do legendary things. It’s wonderful to see Spike Lee and John David Washington team-up. Hopefully, he makes 4 movies with him like Denzel. I actually wouldn’t mind seeing another Denzel Washington movie directed by Spike. What if Wesley Snipes and him teamed up again.
