Kehlani’s Breaking Through
Originally from the Bay Area, singer and rapper Kehlani has hailed from consistent misfortunes and is now Fader’s August/September cover girl. Now 20 years old, the singer has a low key deal currently with Atlantic. While they fund her projects she still stays at a local grass roots stage in terms of appearances. This is how she’s built her current career, from the bottom up.
We see that Nick Cannon eventually spotted her around the age of 18, and believed in her talent enough to set her up and invest in her career. This is already after she had joined a music group at the age of 14, lost America’s Got Talent, moved to L.A, got kicked out of high school, but kept believing for her goal.
After dropping her Cloud 19 mixtape, she was fed offers from the likes of Cheif Keef and Rich Gang, but settled on Atlantic as they were already contributing to her studio time. They officially backed her latest tape drop, You Should Be Here, that has been received really well, if streaming counts have anything to say. Every song boast nearly a million plays and up.
Kehlani stands out because she has a strong voice, but is comfortable with it, so that she doesn’t need to try hard and still gifts us with sweet tones comparable to a Jhene or Tink. She is a writing machine also, and can deliver up to six songs in a single session.”“Factually, hits intrigue me,” Kehlani explains. “As a songwriter, I break down a song’s melody, hook, timing, patterns, wordplay. I study Max Martin and shit. But now, I just focus on making what I make.” For her, crafting a distinctive sound and brand trumps any one big single. “Some people’s whole objective is to make money, and you can hear it in the song,” she says. “That’s never my objective.”” She told Fader.
