A new up and coming Charleston-based hip-hop duo named, SKIP’LO, will perform for the first time at The Royal American on Aug. 21.
Who is SKIP’LO?
Damn Skippy, alias Alex Veazey, and Appollo Valdez, the two rappers behind SKIP’LO, share a mutual admiration for the lyric-driven, break-beat fun of ‘90s hip-hop. “We both have a love for that era. Every time we rap together it comes across in the music,” Valdez said.
With boom-bap, sample-style beats, SKIP’LO’s forthcoming album pays homage to ’90s classics while adopting a contemporary perspective. On the new album, the duo collaborated with a number of different producers, including John Shields of Little Stranger, resulting in a varied assortment of tracks.
SKIP’LO will perform songs from their unreleased album, as well as some of the two rappers original solo material. The show will be lively and action-packed, as promised to listeners. Veazey remarked, “It’s one of my favorite sets I’ve ever put together – there’s no downtime.”

Alex Veazey and Appollo Valdez first met in 2012. During previous performances, such as at Little Stranger’s Friendly Neighborhood Festival at Pour House, they frequently pulled each other up onto the stage. It wasn’t long before they recognized the possibilities for collaboration.
“We were just making up choruses right on the spot, getting the crowd involved. We talked the next day and I was like man, let’s do an album,” Veazey said.
The up and coming Hip-Hop duo SKIP’LO will be performing together officially for the first time on August 21. “I’m just ready to rock it, and to show people that Charleston’s got some hip-hop artists for real,” Valdez said. The duo will perform along with Cleveland hip-hop artist Tobyraps, as well as locals Loser Chris and DJ Fl!p.
