The first time I read one of Rupi Kaur’s works was onInstagram, the white backgrounded post with a short poem and sometimes an illustration would also be provided. After I read it the first time I thought to myself like “wow this poet is really great.” Then after reading her a couple more times, she seemed to have struck me in a particular way. In a way that only a woman can, because she spoke of women’s experiences. But the way she spoke about it was so well written, wrapped up in beautiful language that it really stood out to me.
She writes about heartbreak, incest, molestation, self-esteem and other problems that women face on a daily basis. I became addicted to her poetry and felt that all women should read her work, because all women can relate somehow. I think thatRupi Kaur is the poet that every woman should read because somehow her poems will take you on the road to self-realization.
Her book, Milk and Honey, contains all the poems awoman needs to go on with everyday life. Her poems depict love, pain and loss experienced all things women know too well. This allows women to relate to her poems in their own way. The book is split up into four sections; the hurting, the loving, the breaking, and the healing. Each section gives the reader an inside look of the speaker of the poems and their growth.
Reading her poetry is like having a best friend available in your purse and she looks into the deepest parts of you. Someone you are willing to share your secrets with. Following her on Twitter will give you insight on how she responds to society’s misogynistic ways. She recently caused an uproar on Instagram by posting a woman having a period stain on her clothes. It was removed because it was seen as indecent. Rupi Kaur will definitely channel your inner feminist.
If you want to feel like someone out there understands you, definitely read her book. She may seem fairly young to relate to, but she has great work that will leave you wanting more.
