Reasons Miscarriages Occur

Trying to get pregnant is hard enough, especially when you really want it to happen. Every time you think you might be pregnant Aunt Flo comes to visit. It is just disappointment after disappointment. Then one month your period doesn’t come down, you take a pregnancy test and it tells you that you’re expecting a bundle of joy. You get excited and want to tell everyone but you shouldn’t. It’s bad luck to tell people about your pregnancy until you’re three months along. The reason is because anything can happen to the baby during the first few months. There could be complications with the baby that ultimately can lead to a miscarriage. Then you’re stuck in a room full of baby clothes and necessities.

A miscarriage is known as a spontaneous abortion that occurs before the 20th week of pregnancy. According to WebMd, almost 50 percent of all pregnancies end in miscarriages and they can occur before a woman misses her period or even knows that she’s pregnant. 80 percent of miscarriages occur within the first three months of a pregnancy but if one does occur after the three months then it will be considered a late miscarriage.

Symptoms of a miscarriage are similar to having a really bad period day. The symptoms are cramps, fever, abdominal pain, bleeding that goes from light to heavy and there will be a passing of tissue. Since it’s much like having a menstrual cycle many women may not realize that they are experiencing this. There are many things that can cause a miscarriage such as, hormonal problems, thyroid disease, severe malnutrition, uncontrolled diabetes and many more. Age is also a factor in whether a woman has a higher chance of miscarrying. A woman in her twenties has a 12 to 15 percent chance of miscarrying, then at forty that percent increases to 25.

When a miscarriage occurs the health care provider will do a pelvic exam and perform an ultrasound to confirm the miscarriage. When the miscarriage is confirmed the doctor will determine if there is anything left that needs to be removed from the uterus. If the uterus is not entirely emptied then the doctor will perform a dilation and curettage (D&C) to remove everything. During a D&C the uterus will be dilated and any remaining contents will gently be removed.

Although a miscarriage is a huge disappointment there is still a chance of getting pregnant another time. 85 percent of women who experience miscarriages, have subsequent healthy pregnancies. If you’re antsy to get back in the bedroom ask your healthcare provider when would be the appropriate time to attempt at conceiving. Just make sure you have taken the time to heal mentally and physically.
