In a recent interview with Trevor Noah from The Daily Show, Rapper Eve shared her feelings about the state of Hip Hop. When asked what she envies and also dislikes about hip hop today, the rapper didn’t hesitate to express herself. “What I envy is the fact that you don’t need a label. You don’t need a co-signer. You can get out there and find your people the way you want to. What I don’t (like) is that there’s a lot of clones. I feel like back in the day, uniqueness was celebrated. And I think now, there’s a lot of the sameness. And that to me, I’m just like..it makes it boring a lot of the times.” Check out the full interview below.
Eve’s Journey to Success
Eve got her start in hip hop at the age of 18, when some friends arranged for her to audition with rapper/producer Dr. Dre. He liked what he heard and immediately signed her to “Aftermath,” which was his record label. However, things didn’t take off as planned. Dr. Dre became occupied with other things. A year had passed. Eve’s contract expired, and she ended back home in Philly.
Eve Joins Ruff Ryders
In 1997, Eve was picked up by the Ruff Ryders, the label that was responsible for the careers of rappers Swizz Beatz, The Lox, and the late DMX. She featured in the Ruff Ryder’s Ride or Die album. In 1999, the rapper released her first solo album, Let There Be Eve…Ruff Ryders’ First Lady. That album sold over 2 million copies. For more on Eve’s journey to success click here.
