Idris Elba Shows Off New Freestyle: “Daily Duppy”

Apparently, being a BAFTA, Emmy, and Golden Globe-nominated OBE isn’t enough for Idris Elba. The Wire, Suicide Squad, Luther, and Thor actor is getting back into the world of music.

Elba has been producing, DJing, and rapping since the early 2000s, working under the name “DJ Big Driis”. Big Driis’s collaborations include Fat Joe, Jay-Z, Macklemore, and even Mumford and Sons. In 2019, he even performed at Coachella, and appeared on Taylor Swift’s song “London Boy”.

Earlier this year, Elba released “Courtney Cox” along with rapper-actor Connor Price, and of course, the actual Courtney Cox. Now, he’s dropping his first freestyle entitled “Daily Duppy”.

Idris Elba rolls up to the studio, says nothing, and launches into his freestyle. It’s silky smooth, yet undeniably rough. Though lying back, it gets straight to the point. Why does he do it this way? As Elba says: “Cuz I can.”

A big September for Mr. Elba

It’s a head-turner and another accomplishment for the actor in just a twenty-four hour period.

Yesterday, it was announced that he will be hosting the U.K.-based GRM Daily Rated Awards on September 16th. Elba will share his freshman hosting spot with British supermodel-actress Jourdan Dunn. It’s a big month for her too, as she finds herself on the cover of Vogue Greece’s September issue. Both Elba and Dunn were spotted at London’s Tate Modern Gallery attending the GQ Men of The Year Awards last week.

This year’s awards show will be virtual, due to concerns about COVID, and will be streamed live from GRM’s YouTube channel. Nominees for awards include some big names in British rap and hip hop, like rappers Slowthai, Nines, and Headie One; R&B singer Jorja Smith; and the absolute rap icon, Stormzy.

All in all, it’s just another big month for Big Driis. Be sure to check out the awards show on September 16th, 7 PM BST (2 PM EST)!
