The Hip Hop genre is one that prides itself on the diversity of its styles and sounds. It has gone thorough countless evolutions from the old school ‘boom bap’ approach to today’s mumble rap. Now, a new form is emerging that encompasses a multitude of other musical genres. A California guitarist named Jake Zimma is offering a modern take on Rock, Reggae, and Blues implemented into Hip Hop music. He is just starting out, as he only has four songs available, but his small portfolio shows that he is on to something very interesting.
His songs feature relaxing instrumentation accented by his skill with a guitar, and his voice has an almost ‘Post Malone-like’ feel to it, with lyrics that could prompt its listeners to sit down and watch the sunset. There is an aspect of storytelling in his music that doesn’t require intense listening and connects his style with traditional rap and R&B. Zimma’s track “On Like 40” is his most popular one with only a half million views, but it highlights a sound that could propel Hip Hop down a completely different road. A road with subtle love struggles and a rainbow at the end. Hopefully Jake Zimma continues to add to his short song list and get more recognition for his unique music.
